Functional Properties
In mammalian cells, apoptosis is regulated by BCL2 family and IAP family. Survivin is a unique member of the IAP family. It is associated with several subcellular compartments, and its expression is regulated by a variety of signaling pathways. The expression of Survivin is not detectable in most normal adult tissues, but it has been found in almost all human tumors studied. The expression of Survivin in tumor is not only related to the inhibition of apoptosis and the reduction of cell death rate, but also related to the resistance and invasiveness of tumor to chemotherapy. Therefore, Survivin is an important target for cancer vaccine and therapy.
Survivin may be an Oncogene, involved in the development of tumor, is a potential tumor marker, and closely related to the prognosis of tumor, but also as a new target of tumor therapy.
